Sicilians call them Cipolline, but you can call them Yummy
Cipolline means “small onions”, but the pastry is like puff pastry dough, filled with cooked ham, mild cheese, a bit of tomato, and, of course, sautéed onions. A sweet delight that can’t be missed is the lovely and delicate Sicilian pastry. Once called the “Diplomat” because a similar cake was sent as a gift from a diplomat of the Duchy of Parma in 1454.
Made in the shape of square cake and cut into smaller squares to be served as a kind of pastry portion, is always a delight to taste a piece because it combines the delicacy and softness of the sponge cake with the crunchiness of the puff pastry.
